The upgraded Toyota Yaris hatch has landed in Australia with a hybrid-only lineup priced from $28,5001 for the Ascent Sport, a new addition to the line-up.
- Upgraded three-model Yaris hatch hybrid range priced from $28,500
- New entry-level Ascent Sport hybrid joins SX and top-of-the-range Yaris ZR
- Latest generation Toyota Safety Sense and multimedia systems
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the upgraded Yaris with its hybrid-only powertrain holds plenty of appeal for customers.
“Our hybrid lineup continues to grow and we know this is what our customers are asking for with hybrids making up 40.7 per cent of our sales to date this year,” Mr Hanley said.
“In the upgraded Yaris, the low fuel consumption and smooth performance of the hybrid powertrain provide a superb combination for a small city car while the addition of new safety, multimedia and convenience technologies will provide plenty of customer appeal,” he said.
Alongside the new Ascent Sport grade, the Yaris hatch is available in the mid-range SX version priced from $31,9601 with the top-of-the-range Yaris ZR priced from $34,5301.
Hybrid only
All models in the upgraded five-door Yaris range are powered by a 1.5-litre hybrid system that drives the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The system combines a 67kW/120Nm three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59kW/141Nm front motor generator and 4.3Ahr lithium-ion battery to produce a maximum combined power output of 85kW.
Combined-cycle fuel consumption is a very low 3.3l/100km3 with the car producing just 76 grams of CO2 per kilometre4 on the combined cycle test.
Improved safety has been a major focus of the upgrade with all grades of the Yaris hatch featuring the latest Toyota Safety Sense2 driver assistance technologies.
These include the auto emergency braking pre-collision safety system that now recognizes motorcycles and oncoming vehicles in addition to cyclists, pedestrians and vehicles ahead, and enhanced intersection collision avoidance (daylight only) and emergency steering assist (daylight only).
The upgraded Yaris hatch also gains enhancements to its active cruise control and lane trace assist functionality while the cameras and sensors that continually provide information to the system now operate over a wider area.
Interior upgrades
Inside, the upgraded Yaris also gains a raft of new technology headlined by the latest generation multimedia system.
For further enhanced safety, Yaris SX versions also gain a parking support brake2 with front and rear parking sensors while the ZR grade adds safe exit assist in conjunction with the blind spot monitor.
The system now uses a larger 8-inch touchscreen display (previously 7-inch) and features wireless Apple CarPlay®5 and Android Auto™6, cloud-based satellite navigation7 for the Ascent Sport grade and cloud-based and embedded satellite navigation7 for SX and ZR variants, and a USB-C audio jack.
There are also now two USB-C charging ports to keep mobile devices powered up.
For the driver, the Yaris SX and ZR variants gain further technology upgrades and feature a full 7-inch digital instrument cluster that offers a choice of nine display patterns across three themes of Casual, Smart and Sporty.
Exterior highlights
With the Yaris already established as a stylish small hatch, design changes have been kept to a minimum with a new front grille – in resin for Ascent Sport and SX and dark chrome for ZR.
For the cabin, all models feature new design patterns for the seats that are upholstered in a cloth fabric in Ascent Sport and SX grades with a premium cloth fabric for the sports seats in the ZR version.
Toyota has also revised the colour palette with the Yaris now offered in eight single exterior colours – Glacier White, Frosted White, Stunning Silver, Ebony, Atomic Rush, Coral Rose, Bronx Bronze and Massive Grey8.
Coral Rose, Bronx Bronze and Massive Grey are also available in an optional two-tone colourways with a black roof on ZR8.
The Toyota Yaris is offered with the Toyota Warranty Advantage9, consisting of a five-year/unlimited kilometre term with capped-price servicing for the first five years/75,000km (whichever comes first) and each 12-month/15,000km service costing $245.10
